Spare Change Charters is operated by Capt. Jim Gladish and First Mate Dennis Griffith who have been halibut fishing and salmon fishing the Cook Inlet for 15 years. We operate from our home in Anchor Point which overlooks some of the best saltwater fishing in Alaska. Launching from Anchor Point puts us within minutes of prime Salmon trolling areas and many of our favorite Halibut fishing holes are only a half hour away. Capt. Jim is USCG licensed and we are First Aid — CPR certified and fully insured. We like to take just four people fishing but can accommodate groups of six. Jim and
Dennis are avid saltwater fishermen and strive to provide you with a fun day of Alaskan fishing.
Our vessel "Spare Change" is a 26 foot Alaskan Sea Runner built by Hewes Craft in 2003. She is equipped with a heated cabin including a private bathroom and sports modern electronics to help put us on the fish. Powered by a pair of 115 hp four stroke Yamahas she cruses well and travels quietly at Salmon trolling speeds. Set up with 4 Cannon electric downriggers allows us to place the tackle at exact depths. We take pride in maintaining a clean vessel and providing quality tackle.
A day of fishing is tailored to the type of fishing you want to do and the tides for the day. When Salmon fishing we like to start first thing in the morning regardless of the tides. Some of the best King Salmon fishing starts the first of May with the arrival of the early run kings. The second run "Kenai King Salmon" start showing up the last week of June and we catch feeder kings all year. Silver Salmon (Coho) are in the Cook Inlet in August and September and provide some exciting action.
Our Halibut season starts in May and continues through September. Halibut fishing is best during the slow parts of the tide so we adjust the departure times to match the tide for the day you are fishing. The average Halibut weighs 20 to 30 pounds but many weigh in at over 100 lbs. When you return we will hang your catch for those special pictures and you can relax and enjoy the view while your fish are filleted. Flash freezing, vacuum packing, and shipping are available locally at Anchor Point Seafoods.
You should bring a lunch, drinks, rain gear, and waterproof foot wear. Dress in warm layered clothing, light gloves, and be sure to bring a camera. We do have some beautiful weather so sun glasses and sun screen are not a bad idea. An Alaska fishing license is a must and a Salmon stamp when fishing for king salmon. Fishing licenses and salmon stamps are available from several local venders.
